Rabbi Yisroel Goldstein spoke about the shooting at Chabad of Poway Synagogue which left Lori Gilbert Kay dead, the rabbi and 34-year-old Almog Peretz and his 9-year-old niece Noya Dahan injured.
During the press conference, Rabbi Yisroel Goldstein encouraged everyone to not cower at the feet of hate and to be the light standing against the darkness that tries to consume all of those around it with fear.
“We are a Jewish nation that will stand tall. We’ll not let anyone
or anything take us down. Terrorism like this will not take us
down!..We need to battle darkness with light. No matter how dark
the world is, we need to think of light. A little bit of light pushes
away a lot of darkness. A lot of light pushes away much more,” is
what Rabbi Yisroel Goldstein told his congregation after the
deadly shooting on Saturday morning.
The deadly shooting occurred around 11:30AM, on the last day of Passover. Approximately 100 people were in attendance when the killer, John Earnest, walked in and began opening fire on everyone.
Rabbi Yisroel Goldstein said after walking a few steps he heard “a loud bang,” which turn out to be Lori Kay falling to the ground after she had been shot. As soon as he turned around, he saw the killer aiming his rifle at him.
“Here is a young man standing with a rifle pointing right at me and
I look at him. He had sunglasses on. I couldn’t see his eyes. I
couldn’t see his soul. I froze,” said Rabbi Yisroel Goldstein.
The rabbi and the other congregants were able to survive because the killer’s gun jammed. Also, many of the congregants, like Peretz, began ushering people out of the building. An off-duty U.S. Customs and Border Patrol agent, who was attending service that day, saw the killer trying to unjam his gun, which allowed the agent to engage him.
Once the killer recognized that his plan to carry out what he thought was going to be a “New Zealand” style terrorist attack had all gone awry, he took off on foot, down the street. But he wasn’t able to get too far because the Border Patrol agent took off after him, managing to strike his vehicle.
Knowing there was no way out, the killer decided the best thing for him to do was to surrender to police; who showed up not too long after the shooting had occurred.
The killer is now in police custody, facing a felony count of murder, attempted murder, and a possible death sentence.
